Get your boots on!

Today I’m walking up Moel Morfydd. A mountain that is part of the Llantysilio Mountain Range which is the backdrop to the village I live in, Bryneglwys. These mountains split Llangollen and Bryneglwys and can be seen while driving down the A5104. So I’ve always seen these mountains, but never been up them (Oh the shame!).

Approaching from Bryneglwys side of Moel Morfydd there is a handy carpark just has the start of the path. The views are already pretty breathtaking!

The walk is very steep in places and the path is cover in loose stones, so walking boots are a must! But the path is easy to follow. After a few breaks, including one for a paned and a butty, we reach the top, where you’ll find a stone pillar and panoramic views of Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Visit in Autumn for the Mountain in full bloom!

I’d recommend coming in at end of Summer when the heather flowers, the purples, pink and oranges decorate your path. There also “Llys” (I think they are called whimberry or Billberries in English) grown on the bushes, if you’ve never had them in a pie with apples you haven’t lived yet! So we picked some along the way and make a tarten when we got home.

We were even lucky enough to spot some wild grouse! (Luckily our Westie, Cassie was on a lead).

You can keep walking all 3 peaks to find the Ponderosa a Cafe on the edge of the Horseshoe Pass, this 7 mile round trip, which I have not yet attempted.

Historical Fact

Llantysilio Mountains were set on fire during the War to trick enemy aircraft into dropping their bombs onto the mountains instead of cities like Liverpool.

Shelly’s Holiday Idea with your Pooch.

I wanted to go away with Burt Dog and spend 5 days in different locations where I could walk him without restrictions.

I find it quite difficult to search online and find a load of dog walks locally so here’s my week worth I hope you enjoy.

Where do you take your beloved four-legged friend for a day out that both of you will enjoy, and you will be welcomed?

We love pooches here at Holiday Ideas Wales and we’ve put together a week’s worth of walks suitable for all kinds of canines – and families too.

If you’re feeling brave, you could do all seven ideas – but if not just pick one to start with and take it from there.

Day 1: Llandegla Forest, Wrexham, North Wales

Just half an hour’s drive from the centre of Wrexham, or Ruthin depending on which direction you are travelling, Llandegla Forest is a popular location for mountain bikers as well as dog walkers.

The walk through the woods is beautiful and perfect for dogs, especially the reservoir where your pooch can take a dip while you relax and take in the scenery.

Best of all, the One Planet Mountain Bike Centre – as well as offering mountain bike hire – has a tremendous café where you can enjoy home-cooked food after your walk through the forest.

Day 2: Elwy River, St Asaph

St Asaph is well known as Britain’s second smallest city in terms of population and urban area, and the walk along its tree-flanked river is just right for little legs.

The circular walk – so you’ll end up where you started – begins at the bridge over the river itself, and calls at St Asaph Common en route.

There’s plenty of parking near the river too, and if you fancy taking in some history, you can end your day with a wander around the cathedral, reputed to be the smallest ancient cathedral in Great Britain and dating back to the 13th century.

Day 3: Wepre Park

A five-minute drive from Connah’s Quay or about 20 minutes from Mold, Wepre Park is not to be missed.

Parking is free (always a bonus) and the walk through the woods follows an excellent path, making it perfect for dogs, little ones and pushchairs.

There’s a waterfall area that your pooch will love to get wet in – dogs are allowed off their leads and there are lots of open areas for he or she to run around in.

The scenery is fantastic and there’s a café to grab some lunch and picnic benches to enjoy your lunch at too. What’s not to love?

Day 4: Cae Ddol Park, Ruthin

Cae Ddol Park is a great walk for nature lovers and children, with swans, nesting birds, sheep and cattle to be found – but not so good if your dog isn’t good around other animals.

Taking around 45 minutes, the walk is relatively painless, with no steep hills, paved paths to keep you on track and gorgeous streams and meadows as well as the pond, where dogs are restricted due to the swans.

Day 5: Beddgelert

We’d recommend two walks in Beddgelert.

One starts in the village itself, goes alongside the River Glaslyn, crosses the railway at the gate and takes you to the shale beach.

It’s great for dogs and is best done first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Another, always popular with tourists thanks to the legend of Beddgelert, begins and ends just before the footbridge over the river, just south of the river.

It follows a well-signposted footpath and takes in the stone monument of legendary dog Gelert’s grave.

It then continues to Beudy Buarth Gwyn, with its bronze cast of Gelert, and takes in island Ynys Dol-leian and fields where, according to the National Trust, “=you might be lucky enough to spot the hay rattle, purple loosestrife, whorled caraway and the ragged robin.”

It’s a relatively leisurely walk (about 45 minutes to an hour) and is perfect for dogs and children too.

Day 6: Alyn Water in Wrexham

As you’d expect from the largest country park in Wrexham, Alyn Waters is full of different walks.

One fan on TripAdvisor enthused: “This is my local park for walking my dog on a daily basis, plenty of lovely off track routes to take through the woodlands or keep to the main paths, follow the path down to the river but be aware of the incline on the way back up.”

There’s plenty of parking on both sides of the park, with the Gwersyllt side including a café, gift shop and toilets (including baby change facilities) and the Llay side including a playground and nature reserve.

You and your dog will love walking alongside the river through the park, and dog-walking website walkiees.co.uk said: “It’s perfect for all sizes, with plenty of benches along the way, café and picnic areas, a park for the kids and parking.”

Day 7: Loggerheads Country Park

Loggerheads is a gorgeous country park in the Clwydian range of mountains, around 10 minutes’ drive from Mold and Moel Famau.

If your dog is keen on water, you’ll find a raft of streams for him or her to play in, and – as in many country parks – how long you walk is entirely up to you.

Whether you take a 45-minute stroll or do the three-hour hike up to Devil’s Gorge, most of the paths are easy enough to navigate, with shale paths and plenty of places to stop for a breather.

Chances are you’ll have plenty of company, as Loggerheads is very popular with other dog walkers and families too.

Down at the bottom there’s the lovely Café Florence to finish off or start at, and if you fancy a longer stay the We Three Loggerheads pub and restaurant has rooms to let too.

This Holiday Idea is brought to you by Ray Worsnop.

I’m not a mountain walker these days my idea of a day out is done in the car. If you have an injury or a disability I think we can all agree that it’s nice to take in Wales’ breathtaking countryside from the comfort of your own vehicle. Below you will find my holidayIdea starting in Prestatyn, North Wales. I hope you enjoy it.

Needs List

Accessible. By Car. Parking. History. Fantastic scenery, mythology, lunch, viewpoints and I didn’t want to travel out of the Flintshire.

So a car ride it is then with this in mind that I heartily recommending this splendid jaunt around Denbighshire.

1.Roman Civilian Bath House, Melyd Ave.

You can find Archaeological information here

I start at the Roman Baths in Prestatyn, which those of a inquisitive disposition regarding all things historical may like to take a look around.

A could park on the road next to the site, its not sign posted very well so keep your eyes peel. What a wonderful site, thanks goes to those who look after it. The bath-house was built in about AD 120 and extended in about AD 150 and, according to Chester Walls, had a cold plunge-bath at the far end which was fed by a local spring by means of a timber aqueduct.

You can have little walk around it too (Park outside it).

3. Gwaenysgor Hill – View Point

What a drive up to Gwaenysgor Hill and those incredible views. Yes, you could cycle it if you wanted, but I didn’t (wouldn’t) for this idea. You would have to be a fairly hardcore cyclist (we’re talking Geraint Thomas level) to have a crack at Gwaenysgor Hill.

It’s the steepest in all of Flintshire and although the view at the top over the Irish Sea is absolutely spectacular. The View point has parking so you don’t have to get out of your car if you didn’t want to. I did, a few steps to the dry stone wall to take it all in. This is also a walking path of the Offas Dyke Path too.

4. Lunch stop

Once I’d got to the top, I was feeling a little thirsty and stopped for some pub lunch at the The Eagle and Child. It is just a stone throw away from the view point. I sat in the beer garden its beautiful.

5. Next stop: GOP Hill

So now, having conquered the steepest hill in Flintshire, a spot of lunch its was time for me to see this legendary GOP Hill in Dyserth. Its a bout a 10 minute drive from the pub.

Rumour has it that Boudica (or Buddug), the queen of the British Celtic Iceni tribe who led an uprising against the conquering forces of the Roman Empire in AD 60 or 61, fought her last battle here and is buried underneath.

Regardless of whether you believe that or not, GOP Hill is the second biggest burial mound in the UK, with recent archeological digs uncovering several bodies, and well worth a visit – if you can’t make it up the hill itself, it’s worth stopping the car to take a look.

I didn’t walk up to it as it takes 20 minutes from the car park but I could see it. I always wondered what the big mound was on the hill. I’m impressed.

6. Drive through Dyserth all then way to the round about and take a left and you’ll make it to Maen Achwyfaen, an enormous stone cross standing on a five-way cross road – west of Whitford, east of Offa’s Dyke and close to a row of at least four barrows and of huge interest both to megalithic scholars and anyone of a historical inclination. The little sign says they don’t really know of its origins but I think its a burial stone for an important Viking. You can park outside here too but its in a field and you can’t see the stone as the trees are in the way, a very short walk in the field to see it is needed.

7. Dyserth Falls

Once you’ve had a good look at Maen Achwyfaen, it’s just a 15-minute drive towards the Rhyl direction it takes me 10 minutes to get to the these beautiful falls. There is a place to park and a place to sit at the falls, I watched the world go by. Dyserth Falls is beautiful, unspoilt, and I must see place. I wasn’t up for the walk I just wanted to sit in the little park and hear the waterfall, bliss.

A nice way to finish the day. Plus theres a pub across the way too. Wink wink.

Ray Worsnop Rhyl.

Don’t worry. You don’t have to walk the whole path.

Okay, so it’s the Anglesey Coastal Path.

The Anglesey Coastal Path that’s 130 miles long and takes, on average, 12 days to complete? That you get a special badge from the Friends of the Anglesey Coastal Path for completing?

Yes, that Anglesey Coastal Path.

But here’s the thing: you don’t have to walk it all.

By all means give it a go if you wish – it has been walked in as little as four days if you’re feeling competitive – but we would recommend just walking a section of it.

The section from Benllech to Dulas, for example.

One of the views on the Anglesey Coastal Path

At around 5-6 miles it’s certainly doable, but there are other places to stop and head back if you find yourself feeling a little weary

Benllech is an especially good place to start, with its glorious beach, golden sands and views towards the Great Orme and Penmon Point.

If you can tear yourself away from the beach and the delights of Benllech, you are ready to get walking.

Just follow the signs to the coast path and head north!

There’s not much more to it than that – just follow the signs and keep going! Unless you fancy turning your 5-6 mile walk into a 10-12 mile walk, though, you might want to think about making sure there’s a car at the end of the route in Dulas to take you home.

Benllech to Moelfre

Another great walk on the Coast Path is Benllech to Moelfre, which clocks in a little shorter at around four miles and also includes a perfect place to stop at Traeth Bychan with its splendid little beach.

The Coastal Path is particular popular with our fantastic Facebook group (which you can join here), with one member saying: “I did the whole path in stages over a period of months, used one car and did circular walks when possible. Other times I just walked back and it was just as stunning.”

Another added: “It’s a lovely walk but be wary of the mud off the path at Llgwy. Great tearoom in Moelfre. We did a short walk back in February from Moelfre (after a visit to Ann’s Pantry) with the dogs who love to romp in the sea. Walking back to the path Helen suddenly fell as her foot was enveloped in a Lligwy ganache!”

Small and unspoilt – just perfect

If you’re looking for a small, unspoilt village in the Brecon Beacons, you could do a lot worse than head for Talybont.

Talybont-on-Usk, to use its full name (or Tal-y-bont ar Wysg yn Cymraeg), is just perfect whatever kind of break you’re searching for.

If you’ve only got a day to spare and children to entertain, we can highly recommend the Blaen Glyn Isaf waterfall walk in Talybont Forest, just 10 minutes drive from the village itself.

It’s just over a two-mile walk so nothing too taxing but enough to tire the children out if that’s your secret mission!

Park your car at the entrance – stick CF48 2UT in the satnav – and make sure you’re wearing decent footwear (we’d recommend wellies) and you’re good to go.

And when we say good to go we mean good to start walking alongside the river, floating in the pools and sliding down the waterfalls and generally enjoying Mother Nature (who is Welsh, obviously) at her most glorious.

What’s not to love?

If you’ve got a bit more time to spend in the area, Talybont itself is well worth a day or a week of your time.

If you’re the energetic type and like getting on your bike, then there are hills and cycle paths to explore.

You can also walk from Talybont right up to the peaks of the Beacons, where the views are quite spectacular.

Perhaps your idea of a holiday is more like doing as little as possible – in which case Talybont will be right up your street too.

Talybont is also home to three pubs (it would be a shame not to enjoy some real Welsh beer on your holiday), a restaurant, a café serving tea, coffee, cake and more – all sourced with local Welsh ingredients so you’re doing our economy the world of good too.

If you’ve never made it to the beautiful Ceredigion town of Aberaeron, there has never been a better time to visit.

The lockdown left many small towns and villages reliant on the hospitality industry struggling, but Aberaeron is full of life again now, with every precaution being taken to keep visitors safe.

As Visit Wales puts it, the town truly is a place to come and relax, with many eateries participating in the tremendous Eat Out to Help Out scheme.

Heaven for foodies

If you’re a foodie you won’t want to leave, with restaurants, bars, pubs and cafés galore, whether you’re in the mood for afternoon tea, lunch or something more substantial in the evening.

One member of our fantastic Facebook group (which you can join here) is a particular fan of caravan and glamping site Bargoed Farm and its famous bistro The Moody Cow, where the rustic surroundings are complemented by outstanding food and tremendous service.

You may also have heard of the colourful houses which Aberaeron is also famous for – but whether you have or you haven’t, they are truly a sight to behold.

If you fancy doing a bit more than chilling out, then head onto the Wales Coast Path or The Coastal Way for one of Wales’ most beautiful walks.

Fancy doing some fishing?

Whether you’re an expert angler or a newbie who just wants to give it a go, Aberaeron is well known for its herring fishing – and also its dolphins.

Bottlenose dolphins can be found in just two places along the British coast – and Aberaeron is one of them, with more than 300 spending part of the year in the area.

If dolphin-spotting is your thing, then best delay your visit until September or October, when they are at their peak.

Solva the TV star

Solva gorgeous enough for the BBC to have featured it in their series “A Wild Year” a month or two ago (you can catch up with it on the iPlayer here).

The walk takes you above Solva Harbour and then down to the beach – just follow the signs for Pembrokeshire National Park.

The capital of Wales is a fantastic place.

It’s chock-full of restaurants, pubs, bars, parks, theatres and all manner of things to do.

But if you’ve lived here for a while and you’re looking for something different, why not try a bike ride?

The one we’ve discovered is not too long (just under 3½ miles), mostly flat and full of perfect places to stop.

Are you in? Great.

It starts at Roald Dahl Plass.

Before you get on your bike, the biggest challenge will be fighting off the temptation to ditch the wheels and just dive into one of the many eateries on offer.

From the Bowl, you need to bike down past the Senedd and the Norwegian church in Tiger Bay. If you fancy stopping and finding out more about the former Lutheran church which, thanks to the Norwegian Seamen’s Mission used to provide home comforts for Scandinavian sailors, we won’t judge you!

You’ll also cycle past the trendy container cafés – another good place to stop if Scandinavian churches aren’t your thing – and across the Cardiff Bay Barrage.

There are also three children’s play areas and the skate park which you’ll be familiar with if you’re a local. If not, and you have young ones, they’re sure to love it.

The cycling route through Cardiff. Click to open in Google Maps.

Fancy a drink?

Once you’ve got to the Penarth end of the Barrage, you might fancy a drink outside the Old Custom House if you’ve not stopped before now – the final ¼ of a mile is a mightily steep hill, but well worth it for the spectacular views at the top!

Once you’ve had a good rest at the top and drunk in the glorious vistas, it’s back the way you came.

The whole route is about 3.4 miles but if you’re feeling especially energetic then you could add in another mile, which will take you through Penarth itself, where the sea front, promenade, pier and a whole host of places to grab some fantastic food will be waiting for you.

What’s wild swimming exactly?

Wild swimming is, well, swimming.

It doesn’t have to involve not wearing any clothes (phew!) but it does have to involve swimming outdoors, in what one travel writer called “a natural pool of water”.

That’s it.

One member of our fantastic Facebook group (which you can join here) said wild swimming was her “new favourite thing to do”, adding that it “really helps to reset everything come rain or shine.”

We quite agree. And like everything, wild swimming is best done in Wales. Obviously.

Lake Geirionydd

Lake Geirionydd is a perfect place to start your wild swimming adventure. It’s a 15-minute drive from Trefriw, about the same from Llanrwst and a 20-minute drive from Capel Curig.

According to Wikipedia, the lake is almost a mile long and covers an area of 45 acres (180,000 m2), but is never any deeper than 50 ft (15 m). There’s no fish in it either.

There’s plenty of room for parking and it’s also a perfect place for enjoying a picnic with the family

Llyn Geirionydd in North Wales

Two words of warning!

The water does tend to be cold whatever time of year you visit and it’s a hugely popular place so we would recommend getting there in plenty of time if you’re planning to spend the whole day.

Unlike Llyn Crafnant, which is an hour’s pleasant walk away, all manner of activity is allowed at Lake Geirionydd.

It’s the only lake in Snowdonia to allow power boats and water skiing, so if wild swimming doesn’t take your fancy or you’d rather be on a kayak or a paddle boarding that’s allowed too. Don’t forget your wetsuit though!

30 Minute Walk with the Pooch

Hi Lucy here, you can’t live in Wrexham and have never visited Alyn Waters, that would be a crime but for all those outside of Wrexham I thought I’d share my Alyn Waters Country Park walk with you. If I was a tour guide, which I’m not, this would be a place I’d insist you go before or after visiting Hope Mountain.

Think of this area as a big old country park split into two by the River Alyn. You don’t need a map once you are there, just walk the paths it is amazing.

Follow My Walk

On Tuesday I started my walk from the Gwersyllt side, but you can start from Llay or the Mold Road which is the main entrance.

Alyn Waters Country Park Wrexham

If you are driving you can, like me, use the free car park on the Gwersyllt side of the park, there is a main pay and display carpark but I have lived around here too long to know you don’t really need to pay to park with it being so accessible from all different areas of Wrexham. This is probably not what Wrexham Council would want me to tell you though.

The pathways around the whole of the park are very well maintained, perfect for everyone. It was very quiet at the time of my walk around 2pm on a Tuesday afternoon. I have been down on weekends before and it can get pretty busy mid week is always quieter.

Dogs Paddling in the Water

I walked the route past the river which is always so popular on a summers day, full of families and dogs having a paddle. Throughout the park there are different pathways and shortcuts so I suggest if you are a first time visitor, enjoy the walk and venture around the different pathways, some are circular, some are through the woods and see where they lead you, you can’t get lost.

The River Alyn

There is a variety of grassland, wild orchards, specieis of birds and insects like the river Kingfisher, or the native grass snake not that I’ve seen either of these but people have and you could too. I think it’s a special part of Wales and I hope you choose to do my walk someday soon.
